Smile Cylinder # 5 misfire update

Well i took the advice of BULLRAM, APA228, PURPLDODGE, and a few others who recommended the cheap route 1st of spk plug and wires to fix this problem and it DID WORK. As a matter of fact the 2nd time I started the truck the CEL went off by itself W/O me having to pull out my scanner and resetting it. Thanks to all of those who responded to help me with. I wish I could get the same from the 1st GEN Neon section. I posted a problem there earlier this week and has yet to get any help. Thanks again.

That is good news when the CEL goes off by itself!

Neon and ricer people don't know how to diagnose squat. They're mostly into bolt-ons

Maybe you can help me. I bought this 97 Neon when the gas prices were $3 and $4 a gallon. I got it for a good price. It has a 2.2 SOHC 5-spd 4 door sedan. My issue is with the cooling system. I installed a brand new radiator, thermostat, upper and lower hoses, and antifreeze ( name brand 50/50 premix ) and added the Royal Purple " Purple Ice " to the mix. When the outside ambient temp falls into the 40's and 30's and I have to turn on my heater the the water temp drops to the bottom; however if I turn off the heater and turn the temp **** between the blue and red on the temp dial then it starts to come up. The antifreeze is normal level with no leaks and the hearter core is intact. Any ideas?

Good. My truck did the same thing when i first started it up. My misfire was caused by lack of maintance(60,000 on already crappy ValuCrap wires). What kind of wires did you get? Mine are MSD Street Fires. They are priced good, $44 at AutoZone.

While you're at it. 60K miles is a good time to change both O2 sensors. Preventative maintenance is the key.

Well, it's your catalytic converter that will suffer. A cat should never have to be replaced if the rest of the emissions system is properly maintained.

Unless, of course, you're being facetious. O2 sensors should be replaced every 60K miles.

I will do a major tune-up after Christmas. I asked for some new tools.

I am pretty sure that the O2 sensors are original!

.....I know, no bashing!

I hear ya. I bought my truck with 114,000 on it and didn't get to the O2 sensors until after 125,000. Also, Rock Auto is your friend.
