tire size
I suppose I could just look this up on the Internet but if you guys would humor a newbie it would be great. I am so used to buying tires for my low slung Audi that I have no knowledge about truck tires. I have the 265-75-16 tires on my truck right now and they seem to be about 31" tall. I always thought the first number group in a tire size was for the width meaning a 265 tire would be 265mm wide. If this is the case why is a 285 tire 33" tall instead of being 31" and just a bit wider?
BTW, I have a 1997 1500 4x4 with the magnum5.9(not sure if that matters) and i would like to put slightly larger tires on it to fill up the wheel wells and give it a slightly higher stance. Can I do this with the 285's without having wheel well rub on a factory suspension truck or will I need to add one of the leveling kits that are out there?

285/75R16
Width = ~11.2"
Sidewall Height = 11.2 x .75 (75%)= ~8.4"
Rim size = 16"
Both Sidewalls + Rim Size = ~32.4"
Total Tire Size for 285/75R16 = ~32.4" x 11.2"
Make sense?
***All numbers have been rounded. Actual size is about 32.8" x11.2"
I think you can run 285's on stock susp w/o rubbing...

As I understand it, its because the second number is the percent of the width that is the sidewall height. So a 285/75 would have a sidewall of 285mm x 0.75 = 213.75mm. So two sidewalls of 213.75mm = 427.5mm = 16.83" of sidewall on a tire. Add the 16" of rim, and you've got 32.83" of total tire height... So if you went with a 285/70, you're looking at 31.7" in height roughly....
Hope this helps!
EDIT: DAMN YOU 2K1!!! Beat me to it...
Cheers

At least you confirmed that I know what I'm talking about...nothing wrong with a little reinforcement.
True, I wasn't 100% sure I was right to begin with, but now I am!

From what I have read though, 285/75-16's are about as large as you would want to go on stock suspension.
