VIN number position over about 3 or 4 or 5 or 6 Y=5.2 Z=5.9
front off engine - big heavy harmonic balancer = 5.2
5.9 has either none or a very small one, not sure which.

welcome. post up some pics. we like pictures.

Its the 8th digit in the VIN.

The below breakdown is from the 2001 Dodge Ram Service Manual. Anything I marked with a * may have more code digits not listed for earlier model years, like 1994.

-------------------------------

1st Digit = Country of Origin
  • 1 = USA
  • 3 = Mexico
2nd Digit = Make
  • B = Dodge
3rd Digit = Vehicle Type
  • 6 = Incomplete
  • 7 = Truck
4th Digit = Gross Vehicle Weight Rating
  • H = 6001-7000 lbs
  • J = 7001-8000 lbs
  • K = 8001-9000 lbs
  • L = 9001-10000 lbs
  • M = 10001-14000 lbs
5th Digit = Vehicle Line*
  • C = 4x2
  • F = 4x4
6th Digit = Series
  • 1 = 1500
  • 2 = 2500
  • 3 = 3500
7th Digit = Body Style*
  • 2 = Club Cab
  • 3 = Quad Cab
  • 6 = Regular Cab
8th Digit = Engine
  • 6 = 5.9L I6 24 valve turbo diesel
  • 7 = 5.9L I6 24 valve turbo diesel HO
  • W = 8.0L V10
  • X = 3.9L V6
  • Y = 5.2L V8
  • Z = 5.9L V8
  • 5 = 5.9L V8 HD
9th Digit = Computer Check Digit

10th Digit = Model Year*
  • 0 = 2000
  • 1 = 2001
  • Pre-2000 model years had letter codes here instead of numbers.
11th Digit = Assembly Plant Location
  • J = St. Louis North
  • S = Dodge City
  • M = Lago Alberto Assembly
12th - 17th Digits: Vehicle Build Sequence Number

You should have gotten a tape measure and determined its cubic inches

Just curious...how could you purchase a vehicle and not even know what size engine is in it? That's the first thing I check...
