Default High voltage !!

I have a 2000 dodge ram 1500 5.9L gas and i am having a problem with high voltage it runs a little over 14 most of the time but every onice and a while it will jump all the way up to over 18 volts , have to shut the truck off and start it again , I have heard that the voltage regulator in built in the ECU not the altinator , anyone know if this is true ? and if it is is thare a way i can bypass it instead of going broke on a new ecu ????
Thanks alot

Yes, the ECU does control the alternator. It can be bypassed by using a regulator from the earlier Dodges. I haven't done this but I read about it on one of the Dodge sites. Don't remember which one it was on.

Why do you have to shut down your truck?

The voltmeter is connected to battery via the ingnition switch, it is not directly connected to the alt.

Are you 100% sure it's not a bad field in your alternator? I would have the alternator checked before I started fooling with the PCM.

Mine does the same thing when i put a volt meter on it while running says 14.6 volts. The gauge sits between 14 and 18 but i do know i need a new battery but not sure if that will fix it.
