Default Im new with a question!

I have never owned a dodge, But i really like them. I have drove many, and have many friends with them. well theirs a 1999 dodge ram 1500 with a 5.9 and a auto trans.its a sport extended cab short box with 121,000 miles. its lifted 6" and has 35/11.5x16 and rims that are brand new. but i have heard really bad things about the automatic transmissions in these pickups. so is the pickup worth $5000 and is there a chance of the trans breaking. as you can probity tell most of my experience is with Chevy's and 4 wheelers. thanks for the help and i think this is a great website!!!

If the transmission is well taken care of, never really been worked hard (or at least, not very often), and shifts well...

It could last you 150k+ or break on you anytime. The later model years seem to have a little better luck, from what I've seen, but IMO its a roll of the dice.

One thing you may notice is that Dodges are a bit more expensive to upgrade then Chevys, or so I've been told.

well the guy said he really never towed anything with it, it does have a tow package tho. when i drove it i put it in drive and it took right off, but on the highway at 55 i noticed that if you got on it a little it would shift down. i just figured that's because of the big tires and being in 4 wheel drive. but i don't know. the pickup is in perfect condition, i think its been pretty babied but who knows.

If you are booking along a highway at 55 in 4WD you will be seeing the transmission and 4WD shops quite often.

well when theirs 2 1/2 feet of snow on the ground and a nice layer of ice on the road its kinda hard to drive in 2wd and stay on the road. and anyway it should take it, my gmc will do 65 down the highway 4wd no problem and it has "problems".

Are we talking full-time 4WD or part-time 4WD?

Having any truck in part-time 4WD driving at normal speed on a state highway or interstate is just plain stupid IMO. If you need it in 4WD to begin with, then obviously the road is slippery/covered in snow/whatever. 4WD helps, but thinking it allows you to drive at normal highway speeds in a condition that would stop a 2WD is very foolish.

How long have you had that GMC? I'm guessing not very long, as driving that fast with the axles locked together (if it is part-time 4WD) will most likely cause major problems with the vehicle, just give it some time. That is, if you survive that sort of driving style.

I know that this is pretty blatantly insulting to you, Banshee, but come on... 65 in 4x4???

Ok maybe driving down a ice covered road at 55 is not a very good idea. And ya i admit that it was probity very stupid to do that in 4wd, and yes full time. But iv had my gmc for 2 years and every winter i run 4wd down the road at 35-55 mph (only when its slick enuf i need it). and the only thing wrong with that pickup is the auto hubs are shot and it needs a wheel bearing.

So lets get to the real questin, is that pickup worth $5000? i wish i had some pic's but i dont sorry. it does have duel exost up to the cat. and the bottem of the pickup, like the last 8in of the bed cab and fenders has been rino lined. its a very nice looking pickup and runs great. thanks for the help.

Transmissions are like roulette.

In roulette, you never know when 0 is gonna come up. It can be after 1 spin or 200.

With trannys, it can go broke driving it home from the dealer or it can make it 200K. Yes ours seem to be a little more prone to failure, but the odds arent so terrible that I would be turned off by the model.
