You could turn the 318 to a 390 and it would have good low end torque power. Any reason you'd want the 727 over the A-518?

i am pretty bd at trannies, i have no idea, what that means, all i know is the tranny i have blew, and i know the 727 can handle up to 600hp+ with no problem. can you explain what the a-518 is. and what are the numbers the 390 will put, and can it be made a stroker. strokers are good in the mud

All the A-518 is, is a 727 with Overdrive. Same with an A-500/904.

I've seen a build 518 on a turbocharged motor with 750hp, I'm sure it would hold as long as it was built properly.

All the 390 is, is a stroker from a 318. They sell kits for it.

Offhand, I'm not sure how much power it can put down. I know it's alot of torque though.

ok, i now have new ideas, but i have the stock set up, 318, overdrive, i have that, but my 318, blew the low-reverse band out of the trans, i take it the 518 is a better trans? cause i am really hard on the trans, and can there be a trans lock on the 518, like put it in gears, hold the button, locks the trans, give her some gas, and then release the botton to deliver all power at the same time?

If I had more HP, I'd have the A-518 in my Dakota. I'm not sure if you would need a new Transfer Case, etc to fit it though.

It's called Line-Lock, it's used in racing. I'm sure you could use it for wheeling, I've just never heard of it.

Line-Lock applies fluid pressure to the front brakes *** you apply gas to warm up the rear tires.

i know about the line lock, i had a buddy ( moved and i lost his number of coarse) that had a little switch on his steering wheel of his jeep, he would put it in gear, hold this button and it would lock the wheels, all of them, like not the brakes, but it was in the trans i think, he would hold it and give it maybe a quarter throttle, and when he wanted ( ya go when you want at the mud bogs), we would let it go, and take off like a rocket cause he would stomp it at the same time. but the little bit of pressure, that was there from when it was locked, just launched him. and do you have any idea on how much and where i could look into those stroker kits for my 318?

and can those line locks be used on all four wheels? or is it the other concept of locking the pressure from the rear wheels and holding your foot on the brake and just everything going up front?

You could also get a 360, then stroke it to 426.
