gearing for towing my follow up
ok so we went from the stock 3.55. gears and had it regeared with 4.10...first time we towed since having it done....didnt really notice much difference between the two....towed up a 7% grade at 45 mph rather that 40 mph.....tranny still goes from 160 degrees flat land to 220 degrees uphill..dont know if this bad or not...and that is when the outside temp is at like 50 degrees...tranny doesnt seem to be slipping..and yes the OVERDRIVE IS OFF ANYTIME THE TRAILER IS HOOKED UP...so i guess the temp climb is normal...cause it cools off just as quick as it heats up....think i am going to get a second tranny cooler and run it with the factory cooler....so if you are going to regear to tow...4.56...would probably be a better choice...this is just my opinion...but if i could go back and do it again i know what i would do....but i am not putting another $1000 into the rearend..to do it again...why am i so concerned about it...wife freaks out everytime the trans temp goes above 200....cause that dumps that heat right off into the radiator which causes that to go up ......
You should get a better cooler, the factory one is just ok. Since I don't tow the factory cooler has helped the trans last as long as it has. But, if I did tow I would get the B&M cooler. You might also think about getting a deeper pan.
hey Guys I tow a toybox GVWR 7000# with my 02 1500 5.9 4x4 4.56 gears and 35's My trans temp light came ON last trip out, coming over a grade. So i"m looking for a bigger cooler. Also looking at the factory set up i need to re route the lines as they run right below the exhaust manifold. i'm sure that does not help the cooling. So i will do this Mod First and install a temp gauge. I'll Update later!
