Default off road

Ok, I was wondering how many of you two wheelers go offroading? Any of em around the central Ohio area? Once my truck is fixed, I plan on having some off road fun...

I bought this at Harbor Freight(My wife banned me from there) before I ever got the truck, I just figured I could use it some day, I did use it to pull my camper out of my yard when I sold it.. Used the money to get my scooter, anyway, here it is:

That should help if I get stuck, though I don't have much fear of that.. I plan on being fairly conservative with my ORing..

I don't think that winch would pull out a Ram if it was stuck in the mud. It may, but I would be surprised. 6K rolling stock and 2K straight pull isn't a lot for a 3 ton truck stuck in mud. The best bet would be to go out with someone in a 4x4. Just my .02

Sorry to say it man but I wouldn't count on the winch doing anything useful for you out on the trail except
starting a fire to keep you warm when it burns up. Minimum winch capacity should be 1.5 times the vehicle weight.

Well I would never go alone, anyway.. But as for the winch, you really think so? I have used it to move that camper which was pretty heavy, and my 73 chevy Motorhome I had I pulled it out from the side of my garage so I could get the wheels off and air the tires up, it had bias plys on it, and they were flat, and it was a pretty hard pull, but it managed it. That thing wieghed about twice what this truck weighs.. I aint talking about really going crazy off road, and plan on getting a bigger winch anyway later, this was just what I have handy now. Like I siad, I bought it a while back, just to have, cuz it was on sale.. hence why I'm banned from Harbor freight.. hehe

Eventually I want to get one like this:

I've never been a fan of Habor freight... eveything I've bought there either breaks or falls apart... but that's been my luck... I think that winch would do... but I don't know how long it would last

As far as I'm concerned the bare minimum winch capacity anyone with a 1500 should
have is 9000lbs. I'm STILL in the middle of building my winch bumper which will house
a Mile Marker 12000lb winch.

I would highly recommend buying a hi-lift. They can be setup to work like a winch/come-along if you really need to winch your way out of something.

Also, do yourself a favor and get a shovel. A lot of times you can dig your way out of any problem you might have.

Make sure you get some recovery straps too... don't count on others having them.

Warn winches rock. Their customer service is EXCELLENT! I had a solenoid box get messed up when my bumper got winched off ( long story), and they send me ALL the information I needed to get the box rebuilt.

I've heard good things about Mile Marker too... and I'm currently looking at their 12K hydraulic winch for the Ram...

That tiny winch probably worked because the stuff you were moving was able to roll freely. When you are stuck... you are not on level paved ground. The load the winch would see greatly increases.

A CB wouldn't hurt either. A HAM would be even better. It is REALLY easy to get your license. Minimal studying and you'll be able to get your license. Here is a decent site with background: http://www.radioexam.org/. If you jump to section 2, you can take a sample test online to see if you would pass.

Even when you go out with a group... let someone know where you are going, and when you plan to be back. That way they can come look for you if you don't return.
