1.7 Rocker question
Hey ZMAN and others who have done this mod this question is for you. It may sound stupid but I have to ask, (Did your trucks have the magnum engines?) I have read somewhere that the difference between 1.7's and the magnum rockers are small and they supposedly dont line up exactly right! Is this true? I have an 01 5.9 has anyone completed this mod on theirs without problems?
The "Magnum" designation has more to do the heads than anything else.
The old LA engines used 1.5 rockers with an option for 1.6. The Magnum head came with 1.6 standard and an option for 1.7 rockers.
The story you may have slightly confused is that the 1.7 Viper engine rockers should NOT be used with the magnum engines, the valvetrain geometry is not the same.

so all of these people are putting 1.7s on are yr saying there the wrong size. i have an 01 1500 5.9 magnum and i want them as well what is the right size to get and the place to get them?
No that's not what he's saying... Yes you can run 1.7's. There are a set made by Harland Sharp specifically for these Magnum engines. South East RT sells em. What aim was saying no to was the Viper 1.7's. They are different from the ones everyone on here has...
John Mercedes at Southeast R/T/SoutheastPerformance engineered the Magnum engine rockers for Harland Sharp. There is no one that knows more about them the he does. If you have any concerns, I recommend you just give him a ring or send him and e-mail. He's a great guy to talk to and a HUGE wealth of information about making power in a 5.2 or 5.9 Magnum V8.
As for what they do, I once saw this posted, and I believe it is accurate:
-Stock cam: intake valve lift .413, exhaust .430
-Stock cam with 1.7 roller rockers: intake valve lift .438 , exhaust .457
-Stock PCM friendly performance cam: intake valve lift .458 , exhaust .467
