I thought you had a rod knocking and were going to rebuild your engine?

ok the plan in total is this.. i am deploying in early april anyway. i notice the knock when i lose oil presure (obviously), when there is oil pressure, the knock is very very very faint, and runs fine. so what i am going to do, is put an oil pump in this pig, get my oil pressure back, check the trans lines and make sure i have no leaks. then drive the truck to ny, if it blows to smythereins, oh well, i will call my dad and he will come get me with a tow doly. and bring my ruck the rest of the wy to new york. my dad is looking around and finding me a used motor with ok miles on it. while i am in iraq, i will be telling my dad what i want. we will be buying it and putting into the newer motor by mean of an all crystler speed show in new york, so when i come back, i have a great running truck that will run forever. to back that he will aslo be getting me the "rock crusher" style built up trans and transfer case i need to be good. and from there i will just run her till she breaks something else. whick will either be the driveshafts or axles.

I dont know what the real and true cause is tto the knock. could be rods, could be main bearings, i have no idea, i will find out later today and see what i can do. but chances are, i ill just be going with a newer motor.

and yes i will be keeping the 318, and making it a 390 stroker eventually. i asked all those questions before to do my research on everything cause i like to know what i am getting into before i make plans.

Make sure you prime the pump so you don't get an air lock.

You shouldn't have to install a new gasket on the pan. It's reusable rubber with a metal reinforced lining.

Sounds like the reason you're losing oil pressure is because of the bad rod bearing, not the pump. For example, every time the crankshaft oil hole on the crank rod journal passes the wide clearance of the bad bearing, you loose pressure. The way to fix that would be to find the bad bearing and replace it as a temporary fix.

+1 on VWandDodge above.

You can do this without pulling the engine, crank, etc. Just pull the pan like you were going to do anyway and look for the rod with the most slop in it. If they are all sloppy, then I would replace bearing shells in all of them. Sealed Power makes a rod bearing set for your engine which you can get at NAPA. If you find the sloppy rod, then remove the cap. The rod bearings come in halves called "shells." Just move the rod up slightly to replace the top shell and the bottom shell goes in the rod cap. If you are going to deploy for a while, I would just do the one. Otherwise, I would do them all. Of course you will need to keep everything clean, and you will need to check clearances with plastigage, etc. Also retorque everything properly. Let us know what you find when you remove the pan.
