is it thumping under the feet of the driver or passenger ? if so, its the lower shock bolts not tightened up to their shoulder straining, feet braced on something, gut wrenching 100 pounds of torque.

ball joints, tie rods, track bar can all move around.
i don't quite get the connection to 4wd. that brings in drive line stuff.

I'm just throwing this out there but what about a front drive shaft u-joint? That would certainly thump a lot when you in 4 wheel and when your not, it is still spinning anyways.

I feel the samething. If i understand you correctly its like right under your left foot when driving. I looked under mytruck and the only thing there where the torsion bar connects to the frame. I've always wondered about it, but nver really gave it any thought about what is really going on down there

My best advice would be to just crawl under there one day and start moving things around a bit and figure out what stuff under there has any play in them. Even if it is not what is directly causing your rattle, it is still probably something that needs to be replaced.

Your front driveshaft u-joint should be in pretty much the exact spot described.
