question?
ok i had about 3 inches of play so i went put a new trac bar on now i still have about 1 1/2 inch of play is there anything i could do to fix this or is it just bc im runnin 35s...?
You need to start by having someone turn your steering wheel back and forth without the truck running, while you look at the intermediate shaft first. Check it for play where it comes out the firewall under the brake booster, then look at the slip joint, then the ujoint where it connects to the steering box. Then while you look at that from above see if the pitman arm is moving within that 1 1/2 play . If it isn't, then you can try tightening it http://dodgeram.org/tech/mods/steeri...ear/Adjust.htm. If it does move then get underneath while the person turns the wheel and look at all the steering parts and see what's loose.
i looked underneath nothing appeared to be loose i tried to break the damn screw loose it would not break loose and the fan belt housing is right in the way where i couldnt get a firm position on the bolt to break it loose another question i have is does the 97 rams have a pitman arm theres a bar thats on the very end of the steering shaft and it looks alot like a pitman arm but i ask one of the brilliant auto parts persons "lol" and they said it does not have a pitman arm that the bar is a idler arm? and it looks worn on the end and moves up and down while turnin the wheels slightly its just 40 bucks could this fix the existing play in my steering?
the haynes manual shows a pittman arm attached to the steering box of both 2wd and 4wd, and then shows an idler arm on the passenger side of the 2wd.
spray the nut on top of the steering box with PB-blaster for a couple of days and it'll come loose.
