I was on the interstate driving...i went to pass someone and i stepped on it ...my truck accelerated fine.however now my truck is burning oil really bad...not only that but it shakes and sputters anytime i touch the gas...what do you think is wrong and how long can i drive it like this before it dies...i have a 1997 dodge ram 1500 with the 5.9l

 

sounds like it could be a ring, but you need to do some more testing before you condemn it. Do a compression test, that will help narrow it down a bit. how bad is really bad? describe it a bit more.

 

It has a thick cloud of smoke....probally makes it hard for the drivers behind me to see.i can smell it in the cab.it doesnt want to die but it feels like it wants to shake apart.i hear two different rattling noises from under the hood when i touch the gas...they where not there before.they dont sound to serious but what do i know???thats why im here lol...my truck shutters and has a ruff idol....oh and no check engine light!

 

blue smoke (oil) ? as opposed to black (gas) ?
not meaning to be a smart ***, but it sounds like its going to get serious.

could be an oil seal or valve guide dropping oil in from the cyl head.
could be a ring letting it up from the bottom.
could be a plenum gasket letting it into the intake.
could be cracked head or other disaster.

if you pull the plugs you may be able to tell from their appearance which cylinder it is.
while doing that, do a compession test to see if you have even more serious problems.
you might get lucky with plenum or valve seals. those won't cause a compression loss.

 

Yes, knowing what color the smoke is indicates what is burning (if you're not 100% sure).

Blue=oil
White=coolant
Black=too rich of a fuel mixture

Any of those could cause the conditions you describe. Like was suggested before, check the plugs then do a compression test on the cyls to narrow down where the issue is, if its oil or coolant burning.

That said, don't drive it until you get this diagnosed and fixed. You risk turning what may be a simple fix into a major repair if you just try to ride it out.

 

yeah it is blue...i know that it is oil...i am taking it to a shop today...hope its not to expensive...
it had a problem of burning oil before...its in cyl 1...when i changed the plugs last cyl 1 was caked with oil...every now and then before this happened when i would step on it on the interstate my check engine light would come on...this turned out to be because of a mis-fire in cyl 1...thanks for all the help
