Default Having trouble with 4x4

I can't seem to find any post with my problem but I'm sure that I'm not the only one. My truck is having problems engauging into 4wd. It takes awhile after shifting into 4H before it actually works. There's probably some kind of actuator or something. Just wanted to pick you all's brains. Its a 99 ram 5.2 with a new transfer case and just rebuilt trans. Thanks

As in how long? Under what conditions?

If you are shifting on the fly it might not engage until you stop throwing torque through the system (ie left off the pedal). This is normal.

Your Vaccum acuator on your Front Axle(passenger side) might be going bad. This is a common problem on our trucks as the vaccum engagement is not that reliable.

If it is the acuator, like I said above, replace it with a Posi Lock. It is far more reliable than the vaccum, because it replaces it with a cable.

Posi Lock install

stay under 45mph... when shifting into 4wd... let off gas pedal and cost while shifting firmly into 4wd... pause a couple seconds and the give it some gas like normal

I always stop and put it into neutral, then shift.

I always let off the pedal when shifting into high, and usually I'm only going 35-40mph when I do. Usually I have to stop and put it in reverse, roll back 10yards and then the light will come on and its engaged. I have driven a mile or better throwing it in neutral even stopped and put it in park. Until I put it in reverse it seems like it wont engage. Anyway to the Vaccum acuator? Any clue on how much the posi lock is? Thanks guys

crawl underneath the truck and make sure that both hoses are still on the vacuum lines. Its a common screw up that some mechanics make when they are under there. I know when I got mine back from the body shop they left both of the unplugged and I had to get towed out of a mud hole by a damn ford.
