Default ask this again

ok as many of you know, this is my trail truck, and i plan on maeing alot more powwer out of it, i need trans that will bolt up and not give me very many problems, i have heard that the nv4500 is a very strong trans, the ones out of the diesals, would that trans bolt up to my motor and transfer case?

or if nothing else, what would you guys do if you made say 400+ hp?

The NV4500 trans sits behind the 3/4 ton 2500 with the gas 360. The 360 and the 318
have the same block as far as I know so I don't see why one wouldn't attach to your 318.
I'd get more feedback on it though.

If yours is a stick then it is a NV3500. The NV4500 is much stronger than the the 3500. Although it should be able to bolt up to your motor, it wont bolt up to your transfer case. Not sure if an adapter can be made either.

Why not get the NV241 TC that comes behind the NV4500?

BTW 1500 Rams come with NV231 HD Transfer Cases.

ok well i take it the other transfercase is also stronger? cause i look at it this way. if i upgrade the motor, i upgrade the trans, the next weak part would be the transfer case... so mineas well

also i have an automatic, not stick, wold that make any differance?

Uh, well, not really.

But, in the whole scheme of things, the easiest thing to do would be to swap the entire running gear from the parts truck (transmission, transfer case, and especially the axles) so it will all bolt up. Even get the drive shafts if you can. And don't forget the clutch pedal assembly and all those brackets.

This swap has been a dream of mine for the least several years. But finding a donor truck at a decent price is not an easy feat, and actually being able to afford it is even harder for me right now.

It would be a long process to swap everything in... but well worth it.

so i take it the wy your talking the nv4500 is only a standard? i wouldnt mind that, but would be a very big project. i would like to stay with an automatic if possible. even though yes i would love to have that manual for the mud, and trails. it seems like a hard thing to do...

how hard would it be in your eyes, to put one of these things together, tranny, clutch, transfercase, and i could do the axles but if i do that, i mind as well use that truck for my toy! i just want a strong transmission that will handle the offroad abuse i put it through. because as far as i know, the transfercase and axles in my truck are strong. unless i have been mislead!?!?!

Yes, the NV4500 is a manual tranny.

It sounds to me like this all just started because you want a stronger tranny for when you add more power, correct? In that case, you should really just run the stock tranny until it blows and then have it rebuilt. The stock trans can be quite stout with a good rebuild.
