Default P 0442 code

Not sure what it is. Did some research and found its a EVAP system but not sure thats right. I don't know what a EVAP system is. I drove it to school and then when I turned it on after school the engine light came on and thats the code I got. I thought I burned quite a bit of gas on way home. I have got a 02 sensor code before but it went away after bout a week and that was bout 2 or 3 months ago. I have tightened my gas cap on all the way. ( Some say that's the problem...)

i am going to try an help out here if im wrong im sure someone will correct but but here's your anser...

EVAPsystem mediam leak detected.

monitor with engine running. cold start test. fuel level more than 12%. ambient temperature between 39-89. closed loop fuel system. test runs when small leak test is maturing. the pcm activates evap purge solenoid to pull evap system into a vacuum to close the nvld switch. once this switch is closexd, the pcm turns the evap purge solenoid off to seal the evap system. if the nvld switch re-opens before the calibrated amount of time for a medium leak, an error is detected and code is set..

what all this means is.....

possible causes:

intermittent codition
vacuum hoses, connection or switches have come loose or malfunctioned
evap emmisions system has a leak
evap purge solenoid operation has malfunctioned
nvld switch operation has malfunctioned.

i would first look at the vacuum lines and make sure none have became disconnected/ cracked and if they are repair or replace

It's a problem with the Evap Purge Solenoid. Comes on in my truck from time to time. Check your lines and it could also be the charcoal filter canister.
