Definitely not 100% true. My Magellan Handhelds, nor my Tom Tom need a VSS wire to judge their speed. Also, I've never had issues with my speed on a GPS before. All of my units are dead on with what my Girlfriends TL's nav system.

Sounds like a bad design on the designer's part.

The VSS is just a backup for hard-wired built in GPS devices. A handheld didn't have an additional input because it is an unit which you can hold in your hand and can use outside your car.

I bought the car here in Berlin more than 3 years ago. So I didn't imported the car.
Here is a picture of my car. It was shot at an US-Car-Meeting near Berlin in 2007.
