Default VSS wire & PCM location question

I need to connect to the vss wire for my gps. From what is published on the12volt.com it's pos 47 on the PCM, right side dash.

My question is, is the PCM located on the passenger side on the firewall i nthe engine compartment? Want to make sure before I go and splice into it.

This is on a 97 1500 CC 4x4 5.2

Thanks

Yes that's it, but why in the world does a GPS need to tap into a VSS? It kinda has to know its speed by nature so due to triangulation...

Thanks.

Not all gps units get their speed off the sat. I know, pretty dumb. And it's not a cheap one either, it's a Kenwood, just their last model. But I happened to have it sitting around not being used.

Now for anyone that reads this, I'll be doing a post soon on getting a double din unit installed in these trucks. Was a pain, but they DO fit and so far I haven't had to ditch the crappy cup holder or ashtray yet. Just waiting for my fiberglass guy to get time freed up in his schedule.

But...

No, that makes no sense. The GPS unit HAS to get its speed signal from triangulation, its part of the process.

Is the VSS some sort of glorified immobilizer switch or something?

Not saying you're wrong, but that sounds really wacky.

Built in GPS devices uses the VSS for the speed informationen when there is no GPS signal available e.g. in tunnels.

If the unit is a combined DVD/entertainment system and GPS combined, they need the VSS hooked up in order to disable the video playback while the vehicle is in motion. They get that data from the VSS not the GPS portion for some reason. It is illegal to have a video playback within eyesight of the driver.

How did you get a Ram to Berlin...? Because if you did, I want pictures, now! I plan on taking my Ram with me to England at the end of this year for some London "fun"....

Sounds like MFG's realized that everyone was bypassing the parking brake switch and now are using a digital input.

Oh well, just ground out that wire and bingo, no VSS.

Diefenbaker is correct. It has nothing to do with video playback or DVD's. GPS is for position, not for driving down the road. It's just that everyone has built their units to base speed off of tiangulation and some math, which is why your speed is never correctly displayed with gps units, it's an estimate.

I know this is hard to understand, I dont even get it half the time. But in order to have turn by turn and for some gps units to know you even moved, it has to get a speed signal. Dumb, yes. But Garmin just makes it easier for everyone else.

But it has NOTHING to do with dvd playback.

It will require cutting up the area around the stock radio as well as the dash trim. I just did a quick & dirty job for now. But it fits great.
