Default Symptoms

Anyone know the symptoms of a bad snap ring in a 231 transfer case? I have a rebuilt case from last year and have maybe used 4 wheel drive 6 times since then. When I go into 4hi everything is good. But when I turn around to back up my driveway, I get two loud clunks after I put it in reverse and press the gas pedal to move. After the two clunks it's fine. After reversing, if I put it back in drive to move forward I get one clunk then it's fine. It's out of warranty now, so I'm not even going to bother bringing it to where I bought the case from. And I don't think it did it when I first put it in. TIA John

Hello,

Symptons of the snap ring being broke are either coming to a stop or taking off, you hear a grinding noise. The shaft is moving forward and backwards with motion letting the gear and the slider ring hit each other. Sonds like maybe chain stretch and jumping teeth. Hope this helps.

Thanks transguy37. Is there anyway to check the play in the chain without pulling it apart?

No I'm affraid not. You'll just have to take a look inside to see what's going on. If I can help you with it let me know if you decide to do yourself.

Thanks again, even if I was wrong about it only being in 4wheel 6 times and maybe it's 8 times. I am finding it hard to believe it's the chain. Not saying you are wrong, I'll just be pissed because I wish I knew if it was doing it or not when I first put it in. However, today I used the truck and when I got back home, I had to use 4wd to back up my driveway and it didn't do it. I have another thread about how far the shifter moves to engage 4hi. And mine doesn't move any where close to that.So I'm going to try adjusting the linkage again. Plus I have a Posi-Lok not installed yet. But I did check the vacuum, and it was dead on at the CAD.

That's worth a shot it couldn't hurt. After thinking about it, if you put it in 4wd low. Take off hard from a dead stop and no turn, just straight and see if you get a pop. Also try it backwards, that will put the most load on the chain. If it doesn't do it, I don't think it would be the chain.

Thanks, Im going to try 4 lo right now. I can honestly say that since I've owned it, I've only had it in 4lo once, LOL. That was the day I put the TC in. Just to check it out. And sorry, I didn't mean for this all to boil over into 2 threads.
