Engine shipped from MI to NC help??
I am purchasing a motor from another board member for my Ram and am looking into shipping. Before I move forward I thought I would see if anyone might have some advice. I need it brought from Kalamazoo MI to Charlotte NC.
If the seller has to go to a freight forwarder to pack/ship it to you, it may not be worth the cost. I know Central Freight Co. will pull up right in front of your house, but then there's the problem of getting the van unloaded. You might want to reconsider taking a weekend trip NC if you can swing it.
the actual shipping is not the problem. it generally works like this...
you and/or the seller will get price quotes for shipping costs based on weight, size, origin, and destination. it'll probably cost about $300. the seller will take the motor to a local trucking company. the motor will need to be securely attached to a heavy duty pallet, so the trucking company can move it with a forklift. they will deliver it to a similar local trucking company or place of business that has a forklift. you will pick it up there. your local place will set it in the back of your pickup using a forklift. when you get it home, you're on you own to unload it with your engine hoist.
the biggest concern is packing. the motor MUST be bolted to the pallet, and the pallet must be strong enough to hold the motor, get kicked around for 1500 miles, and not come apart. BEWARE of bolting the motor to the pallet boards, and then having the pallet boards come apart, and dumping your motor on the ground somewhere!! Also you need to enclose the motor in 2x4 and plywood, so that someone else's stuff doesn't crash your motor while its riding around in the truck. you might be able to buy a used engine crate at a parts store. don't count on anyone being careful. trucking is rough business.
