Angry Ghost pinging

hey guys,

2001 ram 5.9 4x4 sport

I have been having a problem with pinging suddenly.. It even pings on premium somewhat, I have replaced every ignition part.

so I started thinking fuel injectors/valves/valve springs

I'm gonna run a compression test tomorrow.. I noticed a lot of carbon buildup in my idol air valve when i took it off, so I ran a bunch of sea foam through it.. the idol air valve was trashed open, so I replaced it.. that reduced the pinging by about half..

I have also considered that the "pinging" noice is not an explosion, but a physical clanking that sounds similar.. valve? hense premium not making much difference. the clanking is not a constant thing, but seemingly random and not always

its hard to hear.. thx loud exhaust...

I have herd of "ghost pinging" problems in these engines from several people.. anyone made any headway about that?

Thanks a bunch, much appreciated..

-Buck

you will have to determine whether the sound is comming from the topend or bottomend. i dont usually hear a "ping" from the valvetrain, usually more of a "clack" but the rotating assembly makes pinging noises

that sucks, i had an old 360 that would do that but it went away if i added fuel additive and premium fuel so i'm guessing i just had clogged injectors. Someone told me that i also might have had cracked heads which led to a loss of compression in my back to cylinders on the right side because whenever i would change spark plugs, those would be the only two that were built up in carbon. I eventually just had the engine rebuilt and all was fine. I don't know what to tell you though man i hope you can find a cheaper solution.

If it makes a pinging noise, wouldn't that be a rod or something? I'm trying to imagine what could be in the bottom end that would be loose enough to clank.. that would mean something important is loose.. could the connection between the engine and tyranny have play in it?

Hehe,

If i have cracked heads i'll prolly just throw the built v10 in there and be done with it.. =)

oh, i forgot one thing, somehow my truck didn't come with an egr valve... that's extremely weird.. I have had 2 mechanics comment on this as well. there is no spot for it on the exhaust, no pipe running to the back of the engine, no valve, and no spot for any of it to mount.. did 2001 not have an egr valve? auto parts stores don't show one for my truck in there inventory list either...

the only thing about that is, wouldn't the noise be pretty constant? like, every time the crank makes a turn

a friend of mine had a similar problem in his 73 nova. the problem was loose headers and bad seals around them. see if everything is sealed and tight there. however unlikely it doesnt hurt to check.

did you run seafoam through the vacuum hose and the gas tank? if not, try that also.
