I've never damaged either of mine, but I would imagine that it helps to keep things lined up between the engine and trans. I would guess that if you took them off that you would run the risk of screwing up the flywheel or something by flexing that area.

 

Thats it, I have seen several of them roll over 300k having never been craked open.

 

jeez.. your getting up into to Diesel high mileage there...
