Bigger Oil filter for the 360/318 -Cheap-
Hey guys,
I had done this a long time ago.. but I just got reminded of it in another post.. thought I would spread the Knowledge. The 318 and 360 can use Ford's Motocraft FL-1A oil filter. Its much bigger and cheap as crap.. I have been using them myself for nearly a year now. I sat down on the floor in the auto parts store opening all the boxes up and comparing thread patterns and O-ring sizes. Everyone was looking at me.. lol Any who, Just thought I would throw that out there. The blue one is the stock 360 filter http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/...500_AA206_.jpghttp://www.theautochannel.com/autopa...9950093mkm.jpg |
fram size ph8a (but dont buy fram they suck)
k&n size hp3001 the motorcraft fl1a can be had @ wal*mart for under $4 |
The stock size Fram(PH16) filter specs:
Height-3.69'' Inside Diameter:3/4 OS Diameter:3.66 Larger Fram (PH8A) filter specs: Height-5.14''-Bigger ID-3/4(same as stock) OD-3.8''(Bigger than stock-better sealing) |
I found that the K&N HP-3001 is even bigger than the Motorcraft. The K&N is 5.42'' high, compared to the smaller Motorcraft's 5.14'' height.
EDIT: The K&N may be bigger because of its 1'' nut on the top. Next time I change the oil, I will check the height to confirm. |

Hey, thats awesome that the k&n is even bigger..
I have never understood why oil filters are the sizes they are.. there should just be like 3 sizes. the ford Duratec 2.3L 4 cylinder calls for the FL-1A... the giant in comparison 5.9 uses the smaller one in the pics.. seems silly, if it doesn't matter whats the point of having 30 different types at the store... alot of which work on all sorts of different engines... |
Yeah I know, its stupid all of the different sizes. I think I'm going to do the same thing you did in Walmart to find a bigger filter for my S-10...Wait, I'm going to do this for every oil change I do. Some people go WTF?? when they see a 13YO kid in Autozone, just wait till' they see me with the oil filters in Walmart!!...lol :D
|
Haha, you should take them all off the shelves at once and open them all around with you sitting in the center... =)
then start laughing historically? I dunno if that part is for you or not.. I tend to take things a little far... lol |

Hey, check this out. Its an oil cooler that threads on like an oil filter, then your regular oil filter goes on top..
It says it fits almost any engine. http://www.glowshiftdirect.com/15-ro...FQMQswodSlsn2A There were many filters that would fit my 360, the Fl-1A was just the biggest I had found. It seems that almost all oil filters can be replaced with some bigger version made for some other engine. just another thing... That oil cooler might not be a bad idea either... |
I think if you added one of those (oil coolers) with your large filter, you would be hitting the frame with the filter. IMHO I think its not really needed unless you were racing in the desert or something like that.
|
Ya,
Im not real fond of connecting an oil cooler in that way anyhow.. I wouldn't buy one |

eh, I read it and it seems that the only real major drawback is the cardboard end cap material. I havent had a problem with them. Should I ever have a problem with them I will change back to wix. I used to run those all the time, but I had one split on a 1995 Chevy 1500.
EDIT: I use the tough guard type so that may be the difference. |

People on the Mustang site I belong too always say they are made of cardboard and fall apart. I used to always use them. I since have started using the Mopar one on my truck. Its right around the same price at wal mart
|
99% of the time i change them by hand. I dont need a little nut. I got big ones
|
The nut is a good idea, but everyone already has oil filter wrenches, so its whatever for me
|
I've used the larger filter on my 87 since it was new 22 years ago. Chrysler products used it in the 60's.

True.. Thats some hardcore stuff though. I think it would be a waste of money for most of us
|
Hey, check this out.. this would get rid of the limit of filter size because of it hitting our frame...

Well, if you want a high flow filter, and get exotic,LOL The only filter brand I'll use on my 68 Mustang is Baldwin. The stock Ford filter was at one time a V-1-F(20 years ago)I think the # is different now, but A Ferrari filter is exactly the same, except high flow, which is a B-253 Baldwin filter. I have used nothing else on my stang for 20 years.
|
Here are some specs for the B253
Fits: OMC - 3.2L Cobra Diesel engine Replaces: Ferrari 45384000, Lancia 2220425, Porsche 90110720302 Thread: 3/4-16 O.D.: 3-11/16" Length: 5-15/32" Includes gasket: G401 Contains: Anti-Drainback Valve and 19 psi By-Pass Valve and Standpipe |
I went to Autozone to confirm that the K&N HP-3001 will fit our trucks. I compared it to the stock size K&N HP-2004.
The K&N HP-3001 is bigger than the Motorcraft FL1A filter. I have also found a bigger K&N filter for my mom's 4Runner and my lawn mower. Off to find one for my S10... |
Yeah, Fram are junk.
Some Mopar ones are made by Fram, some aren't. Mopar, if memory serves, has a couple different manufacturers for their filters. Hence why I don't use Mopar filters. Mobil 1 or Wix or K&N, always. More expensive, but better construction. No offense to you, Laramie, but that "never had a problem with them" argument sounds like someone who uses AVeraGe, I mean AVG antivirus, on their PC. They think free is just as good as a company who is actually certified, tested, and recognized. AVG sucks. If you read one quarter of the real reports on Fram filters, you will never touch them again. |
Hey, the Ferrari filter is a good idea...
I like the check valve built in.. that's a sweet feature. I would add that any filter with more surface area of the medium than the one of the intended size is "high flow" |

No problem. I saw it on T4R.com and thought it would fit great in this thread. Kinda like a buying guide. I shot Steve a PM to put this thread in the DIY links for future refrence. |
BTW that link is also very useful because the filters used in the tests were the larger filters that the op posted.
|
Hey, I like that oil filter page.. the frams really are inferior

Motorcraft is made by purolator and has more square inches (400) of filtering media than others of this size if I'm not mistaken.
Oops! Just saw where the new ones are 296 square inches of area. Purolator still 400. I have got away from lifter noise at start up after sitting a few days since I got away from fram. Very little now and goes away quickly. |

The only thing I don't care for this adapter is the 90 degree turn of the oil flow. May be a little restrictive, maybe not. Just a thought.
|
It just makes one more and it is the main passage from the pump. But like I said it may not make that much difference.
