Default Bigger Oil filter for the 360/318 -Cheap-

Hey guys,

I had done this a long time ago.. but I just got reminded of it in another post.. thought I would spread the Knowledge.

The 318 and 360 can use Ford's Motocraft FL-1A oil filter. Its much bigger and cheap as crap.. I have been using them myself for nearly a year now.

I sat down on the floor in the auto parts store opening all the boxes up and comparing thread patterns and O-ring sizes. Everyone was looking at me.. lol

Any who, Just thought I would throw that out there.

The blue one is the stock 360 filter

I found that the K&N HP-3001 is even bigger than the Motorcraft. The K&N is 5.42'' high, compared to the smaller Motorcraft's 5.14'' height.

EDIT: The K&N may be bigger because of its 1'' nut on the top. Next time I change the oil, I will check the height to confirm.

Hey, thats awesome that the k&n is even bigger..

I have never understood why oil filters are the sizes they are.. there should just be like 3 sizes.

the ford Duratec 2.3L 4 cylinder calls for the FL-1A... the giant in comparison 5.9 uses the smaller one in the pics..

seems silly, if it doesn't matter whats the point of having 30 different types at the store... alot of which work on all sorts of different engines...

Yeah I know, its stupid all of the different sizes. I think I'm going to do the same thing you did in Walmart to find a bigger filter for my S-10...Wait, I'm going to do this for every oil change I do. Some people go WTF?? when they see a 13YO kid in Autozone, just wait till' they see me with the oil filters in Walmart!!...lol

Haha, you should take them all off the shelves at once and open them all around with you sitting in the center... =)

then start laughing historically? I dunno if that part is for you or not.. I tend to take things a little far... lol

Hey, check this out. Its an oil cooler that threads on like an oil filter, then your regular oil filter goes on top..

It says it fits almost any engine.

http://www.glowshiftdirect.com/15-ro...FQMQswodSlsn2A

There were many filters that would fit my 360, the Fl-1A was just the biggest I had found.

It seems that almost all oil filters can be replaced with some bigger version made for some other engine.

just another thing... That oil cooler might not be a bad idea either...
