Default 01 Ram 1500 Trans problem

I have a 2001 Ram 1500 2WD 5.9L. I have never had a problem with this truck until yesterday morning. I started the truck, let it warm up and put it in reverse. It moved slowly as if I had the parking brake on (checked and I didn't) I put it in drive and the same thing. I have 103k on the truck and figured I would change the filter and fluid. I did that and nothing changed. I brought the truck into the shop and fifteen minutes later they tell me I need a new transmission. Can anyone tell me if they have experienced this and what I may be able to do? Thanks for your time

I have also have a 2001 ram, but it's a 4x4 with a 318. From what I understand the transmission was only good for 70,000 to 85,000 miles. It seems some are better then others and in your case it looks like you had a good one.

I only have 63,000 miles on mine at this point, but it seems to be on the way out right now, I will be putting a 408 stroker in my truck soom, so the tans will be coming out as well to be rebuilt or replaced.

Good lock

I also have a 2001 and have 130k on mine..at 110 my first trans went. Did the same thing. 2200 bucks i bought a new one from Dodge. It has a 3yr 100k mile parts and labor warrenty. If you know a tranny guy, i would buy a rebuild kit a beefy one, and rebuilt it. My second one now is not acting right again. Ill let dodge replace it but once its out of warrenty, im going to have my tranny guy beef it up. http://www.transmissioncenter.net/dodge.htm

Thaks for the information, not what I wanted to hear but at least I'm not alone. I just can't believe that a tranny can go at 100k. Thanks for your help

There is a ton of great information throughout this website. In fact several highly trained "tranny" guys chime in quite often. However before I would assume the worst, I would follow the diagnosis charts found below.

Sorry for your troubles, but yep they can go out at anytime. They can give no warning and just go. IF you are going to get this unit replaced or rebuilt, I would find someone who knows how to do all the updates. This will help it last alot longer. if you get a factory reman, you are getting the same thing you had, no updates.

Hey guys, thanks for all the great information. There is only one guy who does tranny work within 100 miles of me and I hear he is pretty good. Any advice on types of upgrades I should go with? I'll check other posts as well. Thanks again

I would request that he put a Sonnax Sure Cure kit in it when he rebuilds it.

When I bought my dodge all my ford buddies told me the trans would go. Dodge transmissions suck they said.

Well my trans went.

What a turd. I should have known. Dodge can't make a good transmission. The trans in my dad's minivan went a few years back, the trans in our shadow went a few years back. Dodge just can't make a transmission.

Every Chevy I owned couldn't handle plowing without ball joints every few months. Now transmission on the dodge. My next truck will be a ford.

Ford , Chevy, and Dodge all have their own tranny problems. I don't think any one is better than the other. It's all mechanical, it just happens.
