def sounds like the CAD ( central axle disconnect) is getting hung up and not engaging right. if it was the t case itself diconnecting it would make a loud bang. check that first. u can get a tcase from a junk yard for like 350. there also very easy to work on. just takes the dealer weeks to get some of the parts it seams lol

My transfer case has a rattling noise when it is in 2wd then when I put it in 4wd as Im rolling a hear a grind then a loud click then it is in 4. The last time this happened though during a snow storm 4wd didnt work even though it was engaged. My cv shaft was no good but I replaced that. Anyone has a pic or link where I can see pics of a tcase. Im going to take the cover off and inspect it. Thanks

it would make life easier if you just replace the transfer case with a good certified used one. i had problems with mine and i bought one for 450 and me and a buddy just removed and replaced and it's been good to go since.

I had a similar problem on my 1994 dodge ram 1500 5.9l. It felt like it went into 4wd but only the back tires would spin. You could feel the difference in torque too (like 4wd should). Turns out it was the 4wd actuator on the right side of the axle. $60 at your local parts store. 15 minutes to replace!
