1996 5.9 Magnum
I have this truck, a 1500 shortbed with a 5.9 (as you could guess fromt the title) and I am getting frustrated. The truck looks good, and has had the tranny, and front end rebuilt, and new brakes all around.
My issue is with the Magnum. It has a severe "rattle" when it hits anything over 3000 rpms hot, I passed a guy herding his 1968 F-150 going 60 and had time to ask him directions to the nearest bar. It was (from what I gather) an old oil-field truck... I think they forgot the oil. NO POWER AT ALL!
So, heres my delima....... I can have the engine rebuilt locally, the machine shop quoted me a complete rebuild, for $2,500.00. The rotating assembley, apparently, is $1500. I thought of short-blocking it and having the heads rebuilt.. only to find out that these are externally balanced.... so why would I want to purchase a shortblock that isn't balanced.
OR! hahaha.. I can buy a 5.9 from a 1999 1500 with 84k for $900.00 (salvage yard.. has a !WOW! 30 day guarantee)
Options:
Shortblock from Jegs: $1339.00
Heads (cast) Jeggs again- $434.99 ea
Valvetrain... Idunno, somewhere in the 3-4 bill range?
Gaskets, and odds'n'ends $200
- $2800.00
Machine shop - $2,500
Or take a chance- $750-$900.
OR! yank the heads off and have them rebuilt, and hope that the cam bearings aren't shot.
The engine has 170k, uses oil (2 quarts every 500 miles or so). Rattles (dosen't knock) when started warm, fires up silent cold. Rattles over 3000, and has nooooooo power....... and I have a boat to tow damnit!
Just looking for opinions.

Welcome to DF!
Have you done the plenum fix yet? I know mine is leaking and lacking a bit of power. I may be stretching a bit, but this may be at least part of the cause for your lack of power. If it is leaking bad it's the equivalent to a huge vacuum leak going into your intake.
If your not sure of what i'm talking about then just check out the DIY section and you'll see it in there.
