Default Tell me it is not my Tranny

OK. I have a new to me 99 5.9L 4x4 extended cab Ram 1500. It has about 145,000 miles on it, but I have only had it a couple months. It is doing a couple different things, and I hope I am not looking at a tranny.
  1. When stopped with my foot on the brake it will jerk forward a little bit every so often. It kinda feels like somebody bumped me from behind.
  2. Occasionally when I start to move from a stop slowly it tends to jerk a little and a couple times it stalled.
  3. When moving from Reverse to Drive it clunks pretty loud. The drive shaft does move back and forth a little when I try to turn it, but I figure there should be some amount of play in the rear end.
  4. Under fairly good acceleration it seems to slip or downshift when moving into overdrive. Sometimes it is like it moves between 3rd and overdrive a couple times.

Change the filter and fluid, and adjust the bands. You might get some more life out of it. Also check the TPS and TV cable adjustment.

Did the fluid and filter already when I first got it. Even put royal purple, that was a waste of money.

Does anyone know a good tranny shop near Austin TX. I got taken when I had my Grand Cherokee rebuilt a while back and don't really know who to trust. My other option was to just order the Viper from PATC. It is cheaper then what I paid to have the Grand Cherokee rebuilt stock. I assume that this is the 46RE like I have in my Grand Cherokee.

If I do order from PATC what stall speed torque converter should I get? They say I can choose up to 2800 RPM. I will eventually add cold air intake, high flow cat, cat back exhaust and probably a mild program.

Yeah, except I bought it at 143,000. I guess since I only paid $2,800 I can't complain too much.

I think you can get a new tranny from Chrysler for around $2500 with a 3 year warranty.
Its a good choice if your not into modding your truck extensively.

i just bought my truck with a new tranny.. it did the same stuff as yours.. took it back up to where i got it said i got issues with the tranny.. they pulled it apart and put a brand new chrysler tranny in. they also explained to me the 2nd gen rams have a check valve that goes into the radiator. this basically can clog at any time.. whether being new its at 5 miles or 145,000 in your case.. long story short when this check valve clogs it bascially over heats and begins to wear ur tranny down rather quickly. if you take the check valve off and put in a $3 peice of fuel line with 2 worm clamps. your good to go and the fluid can always circulate, well worth the $3 and greatly helps out the new tranny.. on the other hand yes.. i think you need a new tranny..

The viper from PATC is about $2400 and it is built with several upgrades. Does anyone have experience with their trannies?

I have read a lot of bad things about the stock 46RE, so I don't think I want to go that route. I was going to add the heavy duty cooler and eliminate it going through the radiator.
