Exclamation Still pinging and confused....

Well im lost now. I just had my cap and rotor replaced ( was corroded to hell), just installed new 8mm msd SF wires. Put in champion plat. plugs. Gapped at .038 and indexed. No cracks in any manafolds, no leaks. Compression is fine. Plenum is perfect. Injectors are fine, running well. 180 T-stat is installed. Ran seafoam to clean out everything.Ive gone through about 4 tunes from Hemi. He retarted the timing from his first tune. Then there was an idea that i was running lean, so he added fuel. Im lost at what to do. I prob have done more but cant remember so please throw ideas at me/ advice. At this point i feel like its ****ty winter gas from stations. Im running 93/92 depending on which station, and ocassionally octane booster to go above that. The octane booster helps but still a little ping.

I feel bad constantly naggin Hemi for a tune setup but i dont know what to do at this point. When my ram shifts into that "dead zone" at about 40-50 and i give it throttle it pings (first tune i had hemi had it set up so i have power in that area it wouldnt shift till i was out of that zone it worked well). Or when i mash the throttle, at about 2500 to 3200 i ping a little untill it gets up and going. Once its shifts and im rolling im fine. But if i mash it again ill ping a little untill rpms reach higher. Now also if i try to run the first tune to see if its any better, it only gets worse! I dont understand, im doing things to stop pinging, the first tune pings more, and the other tunes still ping the same. How can other guys run the sct and not ping. Ive got the same stuff they do. Engine should be clean and fine.

Help.

I hate to say it but all of us who have SCT tuners have these same pinging problems.
I bet if you take the tuning out it will stop.

it has to be the fuel.. during winter months i lost 2 mpg.. instead of driving yourself and hemi nutz , just use your booster and wait for the blends to change in spring..(which is soon)

Hmm alright, i guess i play the waiting game. Ill take the tune off again.

On another note, with new cap and rotor along with the wires, i felt a big gain in throttle response. My butt enjoys it .

Oh another question though, i was told that if i add too much booster or if the octane its to high that it wont fire. How much is to much booster, ive been adding one bottle on top of 93 (the orange shiny label bottle lol), i was thinkin of maybe adding another half but that would be too much huh?

I'm hoping that taking my truck to get dyno tuned will prove that the SCT is a good unit.
I'm starting to think that the standard 'e-mail tune' just doesn't cut it.

I feel your pain. My truck has pinged since I bought it in 01. First 'remedy' was a deathflash from dealer. Still pinged. Installed hughes kit. Same. 180 stat, same. Autolites next, same. Then I bought a Hypertech and it pingpingpingpignpingpignpignpigned terrible.

Here's what helped the most: I went back to Champion Truck plugs, not platinums. A mechanic thought the platinum was not good for these motors. He was right. It helped SOOOO much to go back to regular plugs. Next, I run 89 octane always. And lastly, lots of seafoam.

Some of these motors are more prone to ping. I have one. You have one. Unfortunately, the SCT tune is even more aggressive than PPIII so I'm sure it's even harder to cure the ping. I would try Champion Truck plugs one heat range cooler. Then do 3, yes three cans of seafoam. One through the brake booster and 2 in the tank back to back. Run at least 3 tanks of premium gas and go from there.

My truck never pinged until i put the SCT tuner on. For me its a matter of ****ty gas for my timing advance. My plugs are good and are a heat range cooler. It was working well with the autolites too, im prolly going to throw those back in. Also i run 93 at all times. If i drop my tune(which ill be doing untill the spring time) i can run 87 with no problems. Truck runs great.

No, just change out the Platinums for regular Champion Truck plugs. That's what I meant. Autolites were crap in my engine and all the mechanics I've talked to say Champions are best for Mopar. I know, I know, here comes the big debate. . .

Sounds like you'd be happier just removing the tune altogether. Little less power x smooth runnin' motor = happy owner!

Truck was running fine with the autolites. It was better than when i had the stock champions in. and no, def not happier with tune gone. Not a little less power, a lot less power. Very noticable.
