Default Timing Setting

What is the timing setting supposed to be for the 5.9l 360? I think my timing may be off.

There's a notch under the distributor cap where the rotor should be lined up for #1. After that, the PCM will compensate for the timing.

You really can't set the timing on these. Timing reference is off of the crank position sensor, and as VW said the compy takes care of the rest. Cam sensor is for fuel synch. Some guys have notched the crank sensor in order to make it adjustable, but this isn't really recommended. Why do you think your timing is off?

Have you checked for a plenum leak?

This is a quote from ALLDATA

DISTRIBUTOR
The 5.9L V-8 engine is equipped with a camshaft driven mechanical distributor containing a shaft driven distributor rotor. All distributors are equipped with an internal camshaft position (fuel sync) sensor.

The camshaft position sensor provides fuel injection synchronization and cylinder identification.

The distributor does not have built in centrifugal or vacuum assisted advance. Base ignition timing and all timing advance is controlled by the Power-train Control Module (PCM). Because ignition timing is controlled by the PCM, base ignition timing is not adjustable.

The distributor is held to the engine in the conventional method using a holddown clamp and bolt. Although the distributor can be rotated, it will have no effect on ignition timing.

All distributors contain an internal oil seal that prevents oil from entering the distributor housing. The seal is not serviceable.
