Default 4WD squeak and grind noises

2001 Ram 2500 with 99,0000 miles.

When in 4WD, the front end makes grinding and squeaky noises. No noise when in 2WD or when the truck in idling.

No one I asked seem to know the problem. Anyone out there?????

Front axle joint?
U-bolts?
Transfer case?

If it clicks or pings while your turning in 4x4 drive, then it's your front hubs. Don't let it go too much longer

My transfer case has a rattling noise when it is in 2wd then when I put it in 4wd as Im rolling a hear a grind then a loud click then it is in 4. The last time this happened though during a snow storm 4wd didnt work even though it was engaged. My cv shaft was no good but I replaced that. Anyone has a pic or link where I can see pics of a tcase. Im going to take the cover off and inspect it. Thanks

I greased the front joints and sprayed DW40 around the joints and the grinding noises went away for awhile. But it starting making that noise again after the big snow storm and plowing. Any idea? U-joint? Ball-joint? It's driving me crazy and I don't want to damage anything. The 4WD does work, but just makes the grinding noises. No noises in 2WD.

You already answered your own question, it's the hub/assembly or a ujoint. Don't let either one go for too long without replacing, otherwise you will replacing the seals too. And that's pretty much something you won't want to do yourself. Check the front driveshaft ujoints as well

zman17,

Thank you for your help. That's what I thought. I will take it to the shop to get it fixed. Any idea what something like that would cost? $200-$300 or more like $600-$800???

From what I've read on this forum, I've seen anywhere from 200 to 800 bucks. Depends on where you take it I guess. I can't tell you from personal experience, as I have the tools and never paid someone to do any work on my truck. Well, except for fixing my door rot.

That is kind of interesting. I on the other will pay for someone to do the mechanical work, but I am tackling the door rots myself. I am in the process or replacing both front doors. I thought about repairing it until I found set of doors from Taxes that someone bought and shipped it to Boston but he never installed it on his truck. The only tricky thing is that the new doors have power locks and windows and my old one doesn't. I just figured out all wiring and will be tackling this once it gets warm out.

zman17, I just noticed you are in NH. I grew up in Moultonboro and Tilton.
