Default Just got back truck. What to check out?

Hi everyone.

I finally got the truck from my ex. It's been sitting supposedly since August, but I haven't seen it for a year and a half. We bought it from her father who maintained it well, but I have no clue how (or if) she took care of it. I drove it home, and it seems okay for the most part, but the check engine light stays on, and flashed a few times as well. All I know how to do is change oil, plugs/wires, etc.

Basically, what would you guys suggest that I get checked out or do myself? It's an 01 1/2 ton, 5.9, off road pkg, with 110k miles. It's also gotta pass PA insp/emmissions.

I don't want to tell this to a mechanic, as he'll just have a field day.

I'd say change the oil, plugs and wires. I'd also siphon out as much of the gas as you can and fill it with clean gas. Check the tranny fluid to make sure it's clean, and replace the air filter. Then take it out and run the **** out of it to get it good and hot and let the oil and friction clean off any corrosion or rust that formed inside the cylinders from sitting so long. After that it should be much better. It would probably be a good idea to flush the cooling system as well.

Is there anything on the 4x4 system I should check? Last I remember, it was hard to get it into gear, I better check now.

Enemies of the Pennsylvania brethren take heed! Our numbers are growing, and we are now strong. Soon, the non-believers will beg for mercy, and we will consider it.......

Otay, 4x4 works, but it feels like there are six positions on the shifter. I can tell when it goes into gear, but there are parts where it wants to lock in half way between one of the others. Tranny fluid is low, but still pink, added 2qts oil until I can change it, but it looks like she was telling the truth.....it's just been sitting.

One thing I'm worried about is I'm getting some bluish smoke out of the pipes. That means it's burning oil, right?
