Default Vapor hose routing

My son picked up a 2001 Dodge Ram (6 cyl.) recently and just before inspection time he got a check engine light. I scanned a P0442/P0445 then erased the codes. I told him to verify his fuel cap was tight and let me know if the light returned. It did after about 25 miles. So I next checked the canisters and saw the elbow going to the round one was very sticky and porous so I was all set to replace it. I removed the bracket holding both cannisters in place and was shocked to see one port on the square cannister w/o a hose. Looking at the diagram under the hood it shows the square cannister to only have 2 ports, his has 3 with the third one open. Is anyone familiar with the hose routes for this truck? Where is that third port suppose to connect?

Thanks!

Sorry...those codes should read P0442/P0455.

Mine is a 98, but also only has 2 hoses. I think if you look inside closely at the 3rd one , you will find that it is blocked off internally. I would check the 2 hoses you do have for damage and check the box to make sure it's not cracked.

BTW, the purge solenoid is on your passenger side fender. It has the hoses that go to the can and an electrical connector. Check them out.

You may be right on the blocked port. I did find a website that shows a cap (with part number) that appears to go over that one open port. I capped it, put it all back together and replaced that one suspect elbow and erased the codes. We'll see what happens.

Thanks!
