While the steel/alum plenum plate is a contributing factor to the plenum gasket failure, my research indicates that it is not the root cause, only a symptom. The true cause I believe is the depth of the intake plenum pan bolt holes (or the length of the bolts, however you want to look at it). Because the bolts are too long or the holes too short, when the plenum pan bolts are torqued, they are only bottoming out in the holes, not actually torquing the plate down to the manifold to spec. This then allows the heat expansion from steel versus alum to cause the gasket between the un-tightened surfaces to fail. So an easier (and cheaper) fix then a 1/4" alum belly pan might be to just get shorter bolts and reinstall the stock belly pan. But, the thicker aluminum pan is probably the best fix overall since it solves both the bolt hole depth issue and the aluminum-v-steel issue at the same time.

I remembered reading that in one of your posts somewhere, so I tried screwing in one of the bolts w/o the pan being in place, and discovered it to be true. I ground off the ends of the bolts with a dremel until they were short enough. You don't have to take much off. The threads don't go all the way to the end so no thread damage occurred.

Come on now....If I was going to try to throw some crap on there to make it stick I would look at metal set. Or just common off the shelf JB Weld. Aviation grade dont mean crap. The reason I know this is I work on aircraft every single day.

It's just an RTV sealant that's more oil resistant than regular RTV. Try sealing up your plenum pan with JB Weld and I can guarantee that it will crack and leak almost immediately.

Yeah, JB weld prolly would crack. All I was saying that im damn sure not going to use some big fancy "aviation grade" RTV on to try to fix it. Its retarded. Honestly, if my plenum ever goes out, Im just goin to have sheet metal make me a plate out of "aviation grade" aluminum and call it a day.

I don't think you know what you are talking about OL MIGHTY SUPER POST ***** bluebeast because that stuff is simply amazing to seal stuff you don't need to mess with very often. it is something similar to TAR to my eyes.

Let's do this... I seal my plenum with the "E NOOB guimic" and report back in one year to see if it is blown ?

Hey don't look at me as the retard, Im under cars everyday without a nanny ,hand book & check list to earn a living un like you.

I can care less about the name... hell name it whatever you want but I would of name it "TAR for douche bags that work on airplanes ".

Look all im saying is this, that stuff is great and stands the test of time if you don't believe me pick one up wherever you like and try it on something then put some heat to it and see wht happens. it's not a paste/gel like compound ( like regular RTV ).
