heaviest trailer
i was wondering what was the heaviest trailer anyone has pulled with a 1500 ram. I pulled around 11,500 lbs with my 95 318. It was a tandem axle steel i-beam trailer with a Kubota backhoe loader on top. I forget what model the kubota was but it was pretty large. The plug for the lights on it was different and i didn't have the brake controller but it was a one time deal when we were putting in a sea wall so i had to pull it. dropped it down to 4th gear (couldn't hold 5th) and ran 65 mph with it floored all the way for about 30 miles. Not very safe though when i went to stop i slowed down way ahead but still locked the front wheels and the trailer pushed me probably 50 feet.
Yeah, that wasnt the smartest thing in the world as that is way above what you should be towing in a half ton.
About 6000 is the heaviest Ive had behind mine and braking wasnt the best even with the trailer brakes working.

You could have refused to pull it and not put other peoples lives and property in jeopardy. Hope you learned something from that foolishness.

honestly, i was probably 17 at the time and dad said go to bloomington and pick up my trailer and it was already paid for and we didnt know anyone with a 3500 and were not gonna buy one for a one time use so i had no choice. luckily everything turned out ok. also, i have been towing trailers and have driven our rv (towing car) since i was 15 and on my permit so i have a understanding of how to drive with a trailer (for the most part) even though i understand this instance is ridiculous

It has nothing to do with if you know how to drive it or not, its common sense.
Our 1500 trucks are rated to tow a maximum of about 7000-7500 lbs, depending on if you have a quad cab or not, short box or long box, etc. I've heard of others towing about what you towed and to no ill effects, but without the proper brake controller? No lights?
I couldn't have said it better myself. Unfortunately, most people in that scenario won't learn, because he got away with it.
Hate to come down so harshly on ya man, but that was not smart at all.
