horrible mpg

Default horrible mpg

hey..new to the forum..i got a 2000 ram 1500 with a 5.2 and it got 33's. for the past few weeks its been slugish and ive been getting between 10 to 8 mpg compared to getting at least 12. where should i start looking for the problem

the 5.2 decided it doesnt want to turn the 33's ne more

fuel pump mabye?

it wont be the fuel pump, check the plenum gasket, if you search it youll find lots of info on it. also could be a cracked head, both are very common with these magnum engines. other than that it could be alot of things like general tune-up things, plugs, cap and rotor etc.

yea its got over 100,000 miles on the clock but i give her oil changes ever 3000 and i just did the cap plugs and wires and so on about 15,000 miles ago. i was hoping it was something simple like an o2 sensor. ill search the board bout the plenum gasket thanks everyone

Also check the catalytic converter with a hammer, see if it rattles at all. Usually the decrease in power/mpg is a lot more dramatic than what you are describing, but it could be on its way out.

I'd lean plenum, but is all guessing at this point.

It wouldnt hurt to clean your upstream O2 sensor (that controls a/f mixture). It could be the issue. The one I'm talking about is in front of the cat.

ill check the o2 and the cat first and if thats not it i guess ill just replace the gasket. thanks for the help everyone

that hughes kit seems like a really good fix..anyone else have any experence with it and or installing it. ill probally have to find someone to put it in since im an electrican not a mechanic and i get nervous working on my own truck haha
