Just one correction: When factoring the tank mileage,
most people don't run the tank dry, so actual gas used is only determined by refilling and using that amount. Probably more typical is this: 406.25 miles divided by 24 gallons = 16.927 mpg. Still, that's way more believable than 30.

You're right with your correction, BTW, but he claimed 650km to a tank, which I figured was a stretched number anyway, so I just did that calculation. If he was believable, you're absolutely right. But I figured he is exaggerating, like he did with his first numbers (just a tad!).
First he claimed 30 MPG... then changed his story to 25... then, with his probably exaggerated numbers, I proved 20 MPG or less...
