i have no idea
Today i went my truck (97 2500 5.9 v-8 4x4) to look at my down streem 02 conection, which has been giving me little problems latley. That is now the least of my worries. There was a large cylinder, i believe it is the evap canister, and, A, it fell off, or B, someone wanted more than i did, but anyhow it is not there anymore. I am on an extremly tight budget, so i was wondering if i could just plug the hoses there, cause none of the hoses there are torn. And will it throw my check engine light, cause having that on drives me crazy. Thanks for any help
Pay it forward and take someone elses. JK. Where exactly is it located on your truck. Is it on the outter driver side frame rail. also, is the truck located in california. if so, that might be the charcoal canister which, in this case if you plug it. it will return the favor and throw code at you. let me know.
are you sure it isnt on the passanger side?? i dont mean to ask a stupid question, but i there isnt anyhting on the dirverside frame on my truck, but thats most likely because of the age difference. The EVAP canisters are on the pass side frame.
VAPOR CANISTER
Two maintenance free EVAP canisters are used with all 5.9L/8.0L gasoline powered engines. Both canisters are mounted to a bracket located below rear of vehicle cab on outside of right frame rail.
Two, maintenance free, EVAP canisters are used with all 5.9L/8.0L gasoline powered engines. The EVAP canisters are filled with granules of an activated carbon mixture. Fuel vapors entering the EVAP canisters are absorbed by the charcoal granules.
Fuel tank pressure vents into the EVAP canisters. Fuel vapors are temporarily held in the canisters until they can be drawn into the intake manifold. The duty cycle EVAP canister purge solenoid allows the EVAP canisters to be purged at predetermined times and at certain engine operating conditions.

If it's on the outer driver side then I'm 90% sure it's the charcoal canister, which is part of the emissions system. the reason I asked where you live is because I live in California, and here we have strict emissions standards. so our truck are different then everybody elses rams when it comes to the emission system. we don't have egr valves or any of that crap. we have a charcoal canister that connects to the purge solenoid. I had to replace my charcoal canister when it went bad. If I were you I'd just such it up and pay the $50 bucks for the part at the stealership. if you plug it your gonna get horrible gas mileage which means you'll be filling up more often. so it's your choice, fill up more often or pay the $50 bucks up front. either way, I feel your pain. I'm on a tight budget myself. best of luck. keep me posted

this picture is very similar to what I have on my 97 ram 5.2L the only thing thats different is the size of the hose fitting. hope that helps. just out of curiosity, what made you think it was the evap canister?
