Default Gas Gauge Problems...oh boy....

So I bought my ram about 3 years ago. Been a great truck but there has been one really annoying problem with it. My gas gauge is inconsient. When i top off my tank , my gauge will read over full. Depending on driving style (hard on throttle or soft) i get about 30 miles and gauge will read below empty and bottom out but light wont go on. 20 miles later when i hit about 55 - 60 miles on that tank, the gas light will go on. Now ive read somewhere that the sender on our trucks have a problem of breaking off? I know when i stop real hard i can make gas gauge come up from BELOW E, not on BUT BELOW!!! haha. so what do you think guys? Gauge or Sender unit. If its the sender , anyone got a easy way to drop the tank.

Its been a easy problem to deal with but with me now going to collage this summer up in CT, i would like to know how much gas i have when i commuite between home and the dorm. I appercate the help in advance

I would bet money that it's a bad sending unit. This would be a bit harder for you since your gauge is bad, but wait until your tank is almost empty. Then siphon out the rest into a clean bucket or whatever you may have. after that, just proceed as normal by removing the saddle straps CAREFULLY. That worked for me when I had to change a fuel pump in my buddies truck. Hope that helps. drop a thread if you need any other answers. By the way, some people think it's easier to take the bed off but I think otherwise. I think thats more trouble, but to each his own right. Also, just as a rough gauge for yourself I get around 400 miles out of a full tank. you should get about the same...roughly. I have a lead foot at times.
