That is a piece of the overdrive direct snap ring. I find them all the time when i do services. You should be ok for a while. I wouldnt worry about it until the truck starts slipping in 4th gear. Its a wavy snap ring, so it compresses every time the truck goes into 4th gear. Its like when a spring breaks from compressing too tightly, or metal fatigue.
Worst case scenario, the snap ring pops out and the O/D direct clutches move out of the housing and you loose 4th gear, they clutches have no where to go and the snap ring will drop into the pan.
Dont pay more than 1800 dollars for a rebuild.

Iv, rebuilt my 46re trans myself with only to have to make a tool to compress overdrive spring that has 850 pounds of force. I put my time and $450 parts into it. I had a front band drop adjustment wedge but no major issue. Have over 100000 miles on truck. Did rebuild at 95000. Also put jr. shift kit in to help clutches last longer. Just took my time and was not as bad as i thought it would be. Me, i don't like the stories i here about some rebuilders and their shortcuts on rebuilds. I am very happy with my trans. Just to add, I am using Amsoil fluid which works just as they say. When i leave in morning temp outside is 15, trans shifts like it is 60 outside.

I found a peice identical to that in my tranny pan the first time i serviced it after buying my 95 1500. The truck had 140000 miles on it when i got it and had the trans rebuild once prior to me owning it. The truck now has over 200,000 on it and the transmission decided it had had enough... again. We pulled it out and took it apart with out any special tools and are in the process of putting it back together. So I guess all in all my transmission ran for over 60,000 miles after finding that peice in the pan.

Thanks for all the responses!
I am exploring my options.
1. local rebuild
2. local rebuild and install
3. out of state purchase with no core
4. doing the rebuild myself.
The do it myself rebuild is an option because I know where to get any and all parts. And various performance levels. However I'm not sure I want to spend the time and go thru the learning curve. At this point, time is the biggest factor.

Dblj, I had to make my own fixture to press the spring. Price of one to be bought was 135.00. I was lucky to have some scrap steel and welder handy to make it. You need this tool or it is almost impossible to get snap ring out. Also it is handy if you can get a srcap part of the main shaft with good splines to reassemble the OD clutch pack. The rest for me went smooth. I take it that the sign lost. lol lol.
