Default cold air intakes in winter...

Hey greetings from the Great White North, gotta ask some opinions from some of you guys who get the same weather as me in winter. Freezing cold and a whole bunch of snow! Anyways I still have a stock air box on my truck and want to change it but am not sure about which way to go. Any ideas?

well i'm from upstate ny, i dont how far north you are, but thats about as close as you can get without getting into canada(other than like Mass. and upper new england). anyway, if you're looking into getting a cold air intake with that time of environment, i would suggest getting a completely enclosed one. but then again, if you get a completely enclosed one, whats the point? you're not gonna get any better airflow. and i think the heat issue has already been discussed around here. by the time the air gets into the intake manifold, it's already hot anyway, regardless of what you do to it on the way in.

If you want to do anything, go get you a 14" round air hat and a good paper filter to go in it. Keep in mind, that is not a good setup for hardcore off-roading, driving through puddles, etc. But like wjxavier said, the air is gonna be plenty warm going into the engine...besides, the colder the better, for hp. I bought a cheapo air intake kit and paid $50 for an AEM Dryflow filter for it, but I still spent too much, and would have been just as well off with the 14" round set-up. I think I may try to sell my whole set-up for about $75 and go round.

i would definitely go round, but with the rain and snow i go through sometimes when i go home in the winter...just not a good idea. maybe when i build my custom ram air intake hood someday.......when i have time to do so lol

Considering that "Cold Air" intakes don't do anything at all, your current intake is just fine.

Ah yes, this argument again.

They do help. Talk to 99% of the people on the forum. True, 90% of the CAIs on the market aren't really pulling in cold air, and the "cold air" aspect is very debatable anyway. However, any supposed CAI or the round air element kit help the engine breath better, if nothing else simply because of the increased size of the filter pulling in the air. This causes an increase in acceleration, if not a little HP a tad as well.

If you don't want to go the Volant or ram air type kit (can get spendy), get the round air kit. Cheap and it works.

I had no intention of restarting the debate of if cold air intakes work or not. I know they do on V-Twins, which is what I work on daily. I was just wondering what some of you guys out there did in winter, do you keep it on year round or just go back to stock in winter? I live in Winnipeg, Canada which is about 8 hrs away from Minneapolis and getting the exact same weather, which is -40 celsius.
