i know this is a little late, but its still a good story...
same problem here except i was threading the truck through the 'back woods' with a giant wood chipper in tow and the power steering pump shaft snapped! talk about popeye arms...
i had the same thing happen to me in my 5.9l the pump shaft broke and i drove 5 days with out the pump well, the good thing was that i worked at a dodge dealership at the time and i got the part for 150 new, so i got a deal.
my stearing gear leaks on mine but i cant seem to get a point when i can afford to change it and it doesnt leak very bad at all so for the moment i have been just keeping an eye on the fluid as to not burn out the pump, oh and the stop leak crap doesnt work =P

mine is smoked also...how do you get the pulley off?
there is a special puller tool that you can rent/borrow from the parts store. when i replaced pump on my old truck i bought the pump at autozone they loaned me the tool for no charge. i had to pay a deposit of about $25 or so but got it back when i returned it. the tool catches a lip on the pulley and has a threaded shaft that just pulls it right off. air or electric impact makes it a cinch.
it's just a wheel puller. Mine was EXTREMELY tight, but it did eventually come off. Putting it on was a little tricky as well, but after some careful pounding, it did go back on. I have heard of quite a few pumps going bad, but usually they are being pushed really hard. I know mine was... good thing it was a pretty cheap fix and relatively simple as well.....
