I believe that MAX-A/C is like a recirculate setting on other vehicles ... you're heating air from inside the cab instead of outside air.

oh k well it ran clear right from the start after the coolant was flush out. would heater core be fine then

Do you have great, hot heat after the engine warms up? And it just takes a while to get there, or is it just so -so even after you finally get some heat.

yea i good heat after it warms up. takes 10-15 minutes to get there tho. of course really cold days it takes longer

You might want to change the T-stat. But if it is real cold a block heater will help of course, and so would a piece of cardboard in front of the radiator in the cold months.
