The misfire could be a bad injector, a bad wire, a bridged plug, improper gap, bad cap, burned valve ... any number of things. We, as you, would need more information and some troubleshooting to determine the cause.

ok thanks i talked to the guy more and he said the truck uses oil but not to bad so i think its the plenum gasket and if i do replace it i want that kit from hughes for 86 bucks lol so do yall think 3500 is ok for this truck?
i would do a compression check. if number 5 has low compression, then you have a head or valve problem and it will need a $1500+ repair, and in that case, i wouldn't pay that much for it. if compression test is ok, then it might be plenum or injector or plug or wire and it might be only a $500 repair. if that's true then i'd look up 97 KBB private party value (NOT RETAIL) and pay no more than that.
if you get the hughes kit get the the whole kit w/ new bolts for about $150. the old bolts are not designed to be re-used.

I agree with dh it's not such a bargain when you have to spend the money you're saving to repair the rig just to be able to drive it around. Might as well save your money and find one that has been taken cared of. Your decision of course.
