The misfire could be a bad injector, a bad wire, a bridged plug, improper gap, bad cap, burned valve ... any number of things. We, as you, would need more information and some troubleshooting to determine the cause.

I've been plagued with the infamous cyl 5 misfire many times. 1 make sure the #5 spk plg wire is away from the #7. Then as TMS said chk fuel injector etc. Also take off the valve cover and check the valve spring on the #5 to make sure it isn't broken and while you're at it check the rockers to make sure there's no play. Make sure the plenum gasket is ok by looking doen into the TB, if you see oil residue down there then replace it. This is just a starting point. If it persist let me know and I'll continue.

i would do a compression check. if number 5 has low compression, then you have a head or valve problem and it will need a $1500+ repair, and in that case, i wouldn't pay that much for it. if compression test is ok, then it might be plenum or injector or plug or wire and it might be only a $500 repair. if that's true then i'd look up 97 KBB private party value (NOT RETAIL) and pay no more than that.

if you get the hughes kit get the the whole kit w/ new bolts for about $150. the old bolts are not designed to be re-used.

I agree with dh it's not such a bargain when you have to spend the money you're saving to repair the rig just to be able to drive it around. Might as well save your money and find one that has been taken cared of. Your decision of course.
