Default OEM Radio swap/upgrade

Hey guys,

My 2001 1500's OEM CD player died. I think it might be the infinity unit, but I am not sure.

I'd like to swap it for a junkyard unit, preferably one with both CD and tape. Will a CD and tape unit be plug and play?

My favorite junkyard site has the following choices:

AM-FM
AM-FM tape
AM-FM CD
AM-FM tape & CD
AM-FM tape & CD controls w/ equilizer
AM-FM tape & CD controls w/o equilizer

CD controls? Was there a remote changer option?

Thanks!

is there any reason you want to stick with a stock unit? junk yard would be cheaper but you could have a decent aftermarket radio and everything you need to install for it under 200 bucks.

I still prefer the stock unit.

- looks OEM
- doesn't look tacky
- doesn't have a detachable face
- doesn't beep
- high break in rate in my condo complex
- I am used to the buttons and the way it works
- I can get it for $30 shipped
- all my money is going into my race car

Anyone have some answers to my original post?

My wife would agree with you on why you want a stock unit. She has the same mind set.

What? You don't want to try to turn you Ram into a race car??? J/K.

Anyone have some answers to my original post?
If it said "Infinity" on the deck anywhere, it was the Infinity high-end unit. Another way to check is if it had six or seven (not sure on how many, I know it was more than three) "levers" for the equalizer. If it didn't have those, its not the high end Infinity unit.

I think it should hook up the same (plug and play type), but am not positive. I do not believe their was a disc changer option for our trucks either, but again, I am not 100% positive on that.

AM-FM - Just the radio. Didn't know they even had an option of just a radio without CD or tape.
AM-FM tape -What it says. Radio with tape player.
AM-FM CD - What it says. Radio with just CD player. This is what I had before I upgraded.
AM-FM tape & CD - What it says.
AM-FM tape & CD controls w/ equilizer - This it the high end Infinity unit.
AM-FM tape & CD controls w/o equilizer - I'm not sure if there is a difference between this "without equalizer" and the normal AM-FM tape & CD. Perhaps the first one is 1998/1999-2001 or something, and the "without equalizer" is 1994-1997/1998. My CD player had three little levers, kind of a half equalizer. Maybe some had that half equalizer and some didn't, but more likely they just have extra categories they don't need. Most salvage yards computer organizational methods are flawed, I find.

Great info guys!

Mine only has the half equalizer I think so its the cheapie CD unit. This morning I was looking at my old window sticker and I think it was a $500 option back in 2001

Does anyone know if throwing an infinity unit into a car that had the cheapie will work right?

FWIW, here is a thread of mine where I was inquiring about the Infinity system. IMHO, the Infinity system is shiat, and I can't wait for my new radio to arrive.

Just looked at my truck. 3 Bar equalizer, no mention of infinity anywhere, CD and AM/FM no tape, tweeters in the A pillars.

My factory sticker says 6 speaker infinity w/ CD.

Strange. Do you guys think they installed the wrong head at the factory?

You have the Infinity system. The reason these are trash is that the speakers use paper cones, which rattle, making it sound like one or more of the speakers is blown.
