Angry Steering Issues

I know someone's probably posted this before, but I searched it to no avail. My truck has terrible steering. I bought a new Borgerson steering shaft, fixed all the ball joints and tie rod ends, put in a new lateral link, installed a Skyjacker steering stabilizer and still 2-3 inches of slack in the wheel. I then bought a reman steering box (HUGE waste of money!!), then replaced that with a salvage one off a 2wd I was able to pick up and it tightened up ever so slightly. I almost have this thing paid off, and don't want to put it in the ditch because of faulty steering. I have crawled under it and had someone turn the wheel, and all the play I see is from the steering gear. I can feel the steering wheel "pop" a lot.... I plan on bigger tires, too, so I want one that will hold up, even if it costs a bit more....

Lateral link? You mean drag link? What about the trackbar? Wheel bearings?

No, my truck is a 4x4 so whatever the bar keeping the axle from moving side to side is called, it's been replaced. All thing movable under the truck are tight, but the gear box (that I can see moving, anyway). By the way, has anyone considered a rack and pinion conversion?

Why is your steering box moving ... it should be tight to the frame.

No, I already tried this. It made it nearly impossible to turn the wheel and did not help the steering in the least. Is there anything else to check? Could the actual steering column be bad? All the play I see is from the steering box though..... Help?

it sounds like your problem is still in the steering box, and that your original one was worn out, the expensive reman was no good, and your current junk yard one is almost but not quite worn out.

zman went through a similar episode recently. i think he ending up returning a couple of cardone's as no good, and then got a good one from somebody else. i'll look for it.
Cardone's were no good.
Fenco was the good one.

I bought one through NAPA... they said that they would swap it out for another, but wouldn't give my money back "cause it still 'works'", and the second one was as bad as the first one. I actually had a mechanic install the first one, and NAPA called the mechanic about it. He said he thought it was fine. I don't think 3.5" of slack in the wheel is "fine"...
