Where did you get a new canister? Mine is toast and I need to replace it.

 

Is this causing me to get 9 Miles a freakin gallon? And by the way how much should my truck be getting on the Hw and city. 2001 5.9 4x4 stock tires: 265/75/16

 

That's one of those Stealership only parts. As much as I didn't want to, I just had to bend over and get semi-raped...it was only $40 when I bought it 4 years ago. They had to order it though since they didn't have it in stock.

 

Hmmm, I bought the filter element from Rock Auto and planned to get some charcoal from an aquarium supply store (not bone, it absorbs water), cut mine open, replace, and then weld it shut with my plastic welder.

 

When my solenoid and canister went bad on me, it gave me noticeably bad mileage. If it's been a while, you might want to consider giving it a full tune-up. Start by just checking the cap and plugs to see what condition they're in. I get about 16MPG on the freeway, don't know how much in the city. I drive in San Francisco so at times I get 0 MPG, other times I get 4 blocks per gallon...traffic sucks!!!

 

My truck is idling up every six seconds and I was told its cause my evap system is telling the IAC valve to open up. I found the canister to be bad and that it was blowing charcoal pieces up to my purge solenoid. I replaced the canister, cleaned out the line to the purge valve. Should I replace the purge solenoid? I also tried to blow the line that goes from the canister to the fuel tank and can not get any air through it. is this line clogged or does it have a one way check valve or something on it?

 

The large hose on the charcoal canister had a crack in one end of it- threw an engine light. Napa had a similar hose for $7.
Seems to be fairly common.. and cheap

I'm curious about the wear of the canister and purge solenoid affecting performance and fuel mileage.
How long is the charcoal supposed to last?

 

I had been researching this as well- about the system anyway and, the Dodge mechanics all say that it can do a number on performance and running condition as well. It can even be as bad as to stall the vehicle out and mess with the A/F ratio.

I just bought a new setup this past Monday and, out here in Cali, the canister was 80 bucks and the solenoid was 50 bucks.

I had delved into the schematics and operation of this system briefly and, it's got a lot more going on than just containing fuel vapors from entering the atmosphere. I have been busy making mounts for some new fuel rails and haven't had time to complete the research into finding out exactly what systems are affected and to what degree they are affected but, so far in just one day, I found a whole lot of information on the evap system that was eye opening to say the least.

 

That is what I heard. I am thinking that the vent line that is going from my canister to my fuel pump is clogged causing the computer to open the IAC valve every six seconds. Im going to lift the bed off the truck this weekend and look at the pump more closely. Hopefully I dont have to get a new $200 fuel pump. And who had the bright idea over at dodge to place the fuel filter in the fuel pump. To change the filter I have to get a new pump. Not real good design for those of us who like to do preventative maintenance.

 

The filter/pressure regulator are a little metal cap on top of the fuel pump module. Replaceable without removing the tank/bed if you're very thin
