Question Tranny Slippin

My tranny is slipping. I changed my filter and gasket and the kicking stoped. But continues to slip. Ive been told its my 2nd gear band needs to be tightend . If im in 3 or 4th gear and i punch it to kick into 2nd gear it slips at 2nd gear. Any ideas?? Im hoping i dont need an overhaul. I dont know the history on the truck. I just got it. But it has 142,000 miles on it? Whats wrong ???

If its slipping in 2nd then it could be the governor pressure sensor and solenoid. Those are two common things that fail inside of our transmissions and that is part of what controls the 1st and 2nd shifting. First off I would try adjusting the bands though to see if that takes care of anything. There are plenty of threads on here about how to adjust the bands and how to change out the sensor and solenoid. I would start with the free stuff then go from there.

Thanks. I dont know if i want to risk tightning the bands my self. The shop will do it for like 100 bucks. I cant even seem to put on a new tranny filter and gasket with out it still leaking. But im hoping im needing an overhaul. The truck does have 145000 miles but i dont know any of the history behind it. Can a tranny on a dodge go that long with out an over haul? And dblji6380 GET A BRUSH GUARD SO WHEN YOU DO FALL ASLEEP AGAIN AND HIT A SIGN IT WONT DO NO DAMAGE...LOL

That stinks. I had been contemplating adjusting my bands next time I do a service, but I have heard a lot of stories just like yours about post-band adjustment malfunctions. Don't think I'm gonna do mine...just keep it serviced until it dies.

Dont adjust your bands...........Dont fix what aint broken. Just change your fluid and filter every 15,000 miles.

Default Adjusted bands

140,000 miles on trans and started ro slip and make a very quick 1-2 shift. Tranny shop wanted $1895.00 for a rebuild and $25.00 to adjust the bands.
I did the bands per the service manual, tightening to 72 INCH pounds and backing off 2 7/8 turns. Like a new trans. No slipping and no quick shifts. If it gets another year or so on it I'll be a happy camper. It's been over a month now and no adverse effects. There's some reason the manual suggest adjusting the bands every 25,000 miles.
