Default Exhaust

So, I'm thinking of doing a new exhaust on my truck. I want a nice low rumble, not too loud. Nothing that's going to be too audible at highway speeds in the cab. I want to hear it when I step on it, and other than that a nice rumble.

My last truck I piped (77 GMC 400 V8) I did Hedman's, 2.5 pipes with 'H', turbo packs, and 3.5" tips. It sounded awesome and the sound matched the truck. Now the Dodge is my daily driver, and I've somewhat outgrown the "**** off the neighbors" phaze (that's what my Harley is for).

Any suggestions??? I'm thinking about doing just a replacement muffler, but wouldn't pass on a cat-back set-up. I do a considerable amount of towing a horse trailer, so any help in performance would be nice too. Thanks in advance!

How do you like the 40? My buddy had one on his 4.7 Grand Cherokee and I really liked it, but it's been a few years since he had it. I'm in Fargo, ND.

Welcome to the forums from your neighbor just to the south! How are things up in ND?

I run the Super 44. IIRC, its a tad louder than the 40. Both are good though. It'll never hurt you to get a Magnaflow high flow cat either if you have the $$$.

Aww, I understand Dodge1500. How did you like the 40 while you had it? I had been thinking about going that route. Did you have the Standard or the Super?

Thanks for the welcome Jason, things in Fargo are wet... I'm not sure if you've caught us on national news the past few weeks, but we pretty much shut town the down for 2+ weeks to deal with massive flood issues/threats from the Red River and a massive snowfall this past year. I was thinking about the Magnaflow cat too. I saw a few somewhat decent deals on eBay. I think I may wait a paycheck or two for the cat, but I'll check to see if mine is still good first. If it's on the way out, I'll have to replace it sooner. How is the interior noise with the Super 44 at highway speeds?

Thanks for help!

I have flowmaster 40's on my truck. I switched up from a dynomax super turbo. I loved the dynomax. It was a nice mellow tone. The 40's, while I like them at times, can be a little annoying after a while. If I could, I'd go back to my super turbo. I know it's not the norm around here, but that's just my humple opinion.

Magnaflow sounds pretty good for a low resonance and good grit on acceleration...bad part is they are overpriced IMO. The Flowmaster 40 series 2-chamber is classic...can't go wrong there. Honestly, a good sounding muffler that is really cheap is the Thrush Turbo, which sells for around $30. They are nice on acceleration and made by Dynomax. I have a Thrush glasspack with a side exit, and I like it, but I have been considering running the pipe back out the rear...getting a little tired of the cabin noise.

Funny, I started listening to samples here at work to figure out what I'm going to put on in the next few weeks. People keep coming over to my window to see who the idiot is revving their engine outside. I kind of like the sound of the the Thrush Glasspacks
