Default Choosing a muffler

Recently bought a '99. PO had a sport muffler on it that's too darn loud. So I'm on the prowl for a pair of inexpensive quiet mufflers. Muffler shop wants $350. I'm in a small town so the local pick-n-pull doesn't have any 2nd gen Rams. Questions:

1) I'm thinking that I could just find a couple generic looking mufflers in good shape at the pick-n-pull and they'd work just fine. That reasonable?

2) If the above is a bad idea, what other vehicles used a muffler about the same size.

I'm in Savannah, GA. If anyone wants a pair of loud mufflers, they're about to become available.

Later edit: See post #6. Its not 2 mufflers but a single "2 into 1".

I've always been a huge fan of the factory muffler. Just enough noise to know it's a V8, but not noisy enough to bother anyone or sound like crap. See if you can find one in a yard.

If your muffler shop wants $350 for factory replacements they are nuts. I would say look for mufflers on any full-size truck with comparable engine specs at the junk yard and you should be fine...doesn't have to be from a Dodge. What kind are on it now?

I'm not sure what the brand is. There's no obvious manufacturer's markings. They're little things about 14X12X6 inches.

Thanks for the info. I'll head to the pick-n-pull this afternoon and snoop around.

I know that dynomax makes replacement mufflers with large cases which should give a
quiet tone. I think you can get into a 32 inch case length. I don't believe they are very
expensive.

I screwed up and got my "vehicles with muffler problems"confused. The Ram has a 2 into 1 fairly OEM looking muffler. I figure that a muffler shop ought to be willing to replace that with something quiet for far less then the $350 they quoted when I told them 2 individual mufflers.

Any ideas on more clever solutions to replace a loud 2 into 1?

if you have a 2 into one muffler with 2.5'' inlets and a 3'' outlet I can point you to a muffler
a little over $100.

check summitracing.com for some dynomax turbo muffler. They have a nice, mellow tone to them.
